Marketing v PR

11 Apr 2018

I’m often asked the difference between marketing and public relations.

In simple terms, advertising (marketing) is what you pay for, positive publicity (public relations) is what you pray for.

Marketing

  • Paid
  • Builds exposure
  • Audience is sceptical
  • Guaranteed placement
  • Mostly visual
  • More expensive
  • “Buy this product”

Versus

PR

  • Earned
  • Builds trust
  • Credibility – media gives third-party endorsement
  • Must persuade media / journalist
  • PR uses language and complementary images
  • Less expensive
  • “This is important”

Wouldn’t you rather have Clout?
