Everyone knows the famous line… “Never work with children or animals.”
Well, at the weekend I did both for Precious Paws Animal Rescue, a not-for-profit organisation which is run by an army of 224 volunteers who care for neglected and forgotten dogs in their family homes.
They’re hoping to reverse a nationwide trend that has seen 250,000 dogs euthanised in Australian pounds in the past year.
Volunteer Carl Licastro told me Autumn is traditionally the charity’s peak period.
“Unfortunately, it’s about now some families decide they don’t want their four-legged Christmas presents anymore,” Mr Licastro said.
“In the past month we’ve adopted more than 50 dogs that require vet care, medication, food and shelter and love.
“Our rescue dogs aren’t broken or damaged, they have just experienced more in life than others.
“They have stories we wish they could tell, but can’t, so Precious Paws Animal Rescue is their voice and pathway to a new life.
“Many poundies know they have been rescued and become very loving and grateful companions.”
Before the rescued dogs find their new forever homes, volunteers perform a character, energy and temperament assessment, which helps match the dog with the perfect owner.
As a not-for-profit unfunded charity, Precious Paws Animal Rescue relies heavily on supporters and donations to rescue neglected and at-risk dogs. To donate or volunteer, please visit www.ppar.com.au
Thanks also to John Gass and Jill Poulsen at The Courier-Mail for the great pic and write-up, Barry the pup and Sophie and Lucy French for being perfect models.
